Adventure day! PE, History and Geography.

Map reading - we used a map to find our way, we did come across one major obstacle that wasn't on the map but we weighed up the pros and cons of continuing on our route. We ended up having a slight panic when we realised that we had to change course but we did have a wonderful time looking at some huge houses.

Our goal for the day was to find the site of the Iron Age Hill Fort, and we're incredibly lucky to have one on our doorstep almost. Iron age hill forts are not particularly common in Yorkshire. We were disappointed to find a housing estate had been built on the site, but it's interesting that despite the years, the site still has a similar function.

Niamh brought her metal detector but we didn't find anything as she was getting quite exhausted towards the end. We did keep veering off our route to explore the woodland, and climbing up and down the 60 metre elevation was hard work. We heard a fox as the afternoon drew to a close and we found animal tracks (mainly dogs) and lots of deep burrows and holes.

We also found a possible Summer camping spot and Niamh suggested we come one night to sit and watch for animals. There is a huge amount of diverse wildlife in these woods but the water from the river Nidd seemed a lot cleaner than further downriver. In total we did over 20,000 steps which had PE covered for the day.

I think we'll be back to do more metal detecting! Flints and coins have been discovered here and Niamh desperately wants to own a flint.
