Art History - Henri Mattise
I think Matisse was trying to create the ocean with this piece.
Henri Mattise said that paper cutting was like drawing with scissors
but I tried paper cutting and I would say the opposite when I tried paper cutting
it was more difficult than drawing. Paper cutting produces an abstract shape. Abstraction means to
simplify using shapes, colours and textures.
Mattise was initially a painter and he seemed to like women. His early work seemed focused on light,
but then it changed to simpler shapes. Colour is important in deciding what you're looking at with
paper cutting.
